It is an Italian town of 6,386 inhabitants, in the province Of Vicenza in Veneto. The main center of the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, on the border with Trentino, it was once the capital of the Respectable Regency of the Sette Comuni. Asiago found itself, after the Offensive during the Spring in the First World War, in no man’s land and suffered terrible bombings that completely razed it to the ground. It is a well known location for winter tourism (in particular for Nordic skiing) and the tourism during the summer.
It is known throughout the world for the chess game that takes place with living characters all dressed in sumptuous costumes, in the town square, every two years (even years) in the second weekend of September: it is a tradition that started in 1923 which is believed to be inspired to an event in 1454, although there is no historical evidence. Legend narrates that Rinaldo d'Angarano e Vieri from Vallonara, two young gentlemen, were at the same time lovers of the beautiful Lionora, daughter of Taddeo Parisio, a castellan of Marostica, who forbade the two suitors to fight in a bloody duel and imposed, instead, a chess challenge. The defeated one would also become his relative by marrying Oldrada, his younger sister.
Marostica is also known for its cherries, to which a festival is dedicated in spring.
